Episode 4 | Healing Through Wonder
Creative Director and designer Stephen Baker, from Local Projects, joins Wellness and Wonder to share how an imaginative digital lobby installation at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta is transforming the hospital experience, bringing joy, wonder, and healing through playful, hybrid animal characters and empathetic design.
At Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, Local Projects set out to transform the hospital lobby into a place of joy and discovery. Led by Stephen Baker, the team designed a 32-foot screen that comes alive with playful, hybrid animals responding to every movement. Through a blend of empathy, technology, and storytelling, the space evolves into an experience of comfort, wonder, and healing connection.
“A big part from the hospital’s perspective was joy. We really wanted to create a space that feels joyful to the guests.” — Stephen Baker Creative Director at Local Projects
For Stephen, the path to this work began at Parsons School of Design, where he explored how technology could reshape human interaction. That curiosity carried him through projects in museums, public spaces, and ultimately to Local Projects
At Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta’s new Arthur M. Blank Hospital, his team was brought in early to design a digital experience that aligned with the architecture itself. The result: a whimsical lobby installation where patients, siblings, and families are greeted by colorful, hybrid creatures that react in real-time, walking, flying, and playing alongside visitors. Behind the scenes, sensors and AI-powered cameras track gestures without recording or identifying anyone, ensuring privacy while making the experience feel alive and responsive.
By leaning into joy, wonder, and interactivity, Local Projects created a space that comforts and connects, reminding us that even in the most challenging environments, design can heal.
