Walter Reed National Medical Center

U.S. Department of the Navy

As part of the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure Act (BRAC), the Department of Defense combined four National Capital Region hospitals into two. The Bethesda National Naval Medical Center was combined with DC's Walter Reed, providing inpatient care for military personnel, combat casualties, veterans, and family members. The new Walter Reed staff includes specialized doctors and professionals who care for service members on active duty and for patients with very specialized care, including orthopedic trauma and open traumatic brain injuries. Bialek continues to work with Walter Reed, supplying new product and servicing existing installations.

The Results

This is the largest medical restructuring ever undertaken in the military health system. [We have focused on] quality of care—all of the patient care that we’re providing. A particular patient population we’re always aware of are wounded, ill and injured [servicemembers]. And then the capacity to take care of the wounded, ill and injured who are returning now from Iraq and Afghanistan as we do these moves.
