Massachusetts Avenue Surgery Center (MASC)

This renovation took place while the existing surgery suite was in use, creating a new state-of-the-art space without affecting on-going operations. The project expands the number of ORs to three with room for a fourth; increases the number of pre-op, PACU, and Phase II patient bays; and improves the amount of space and quality of physician lounges and administration spaces. Currently approved for up to a 23 hour patient stay, the center can be upgraded for longer stays in the future. Bialek Environments worked with MASC to reuse existing furniture, allowing them to focus funds on updating equipment and renovating the space for new uses. An existing Herman Miller nurse station was refreshed to address the current needs of the space and present a more contemporary look. Millwork was locally crafted and attached to brackets, which hang from the DIRTT walls.

By using Bialek’s Intellistruct team, MASC was able to proceed through construction with minimal disruption to the occupied spaces. Going forward, they have built-in flexibility to merge two transition bays into one for longer stays. With DIRTT’s tile system, spaces can be easily changed and new services—electricity, plumbing, medical gases—and be routed to spaces.
